Webinars
Working abroad
Many students are drawn to a career in the built environment because of the opportunities for working overseas. But how exactly do you take advantage of them? This webinar will discuss the hottest destinations for professionals in design, construction and property, what employers are looking for in those countries, the best way to build a truly international career – and how a six-month trip to New York can easily turn into two and a half years.
Speakers: Andrew Pratt, Associate Structural Engineer, WSP Cantor Seinuk, Mr. James Rogers, BSc (Hons) MRICS, Associate Director Jones Lang LaSalle, Shanghai, Andrew Williamson, Cost Manager, EC Harris
Graduate schemes
There are many different graduate programmes within the built environment and it can be difficult to decide which ones would suit you best. In this session, recent graduates working in architecture, engineering and surveying will discuss their experiences of different schemes, how to prepare for the selection process, the questions they’d ask a potential employer and how to negotiate the best starting package.
Speakers: Aaron Wall, Structural Engineer, WSP Group, Nick Adams, Architectural Assistant, Sheppard Robson Architects, Thomas Wallbank, Cost Manager, Turner & Townsend
Opportunities for Students Outside Construction and Property
You don’t need to have a degree in a construction or property-related subject to enjoy all the benefits of a career in the built environment. Many employers will not only offer training to graduates from other disciplines, but are actively seeking recruits who can bring different skills to their professions. In this session, recent converts discuss the opportunities for “non-cognate” students, how a geography degree can help you get to the top in property and why more and more women are choosing a career in this fascinating industry.
Speakers: Kelly Bramford, Trainee Building Surveyor, Bidwells, Jenny Eke, Quantity Surveyor, Cyril Sweett, Sarah Moss, Associate Director, Savills Commercial Ltd., Kate Backler, Construction Manager, Mace Ltd.
Work placements
Gaining experience of your chosen industry before you graduate is an invaluable addition to your studies and gives you a head start in securing your dream job. But how can you find the most worthwhile experiences – and how do you avoid getting stuck in the photocopying room? Here a work placement adviser from Bradford University and a student who’s already undertaken four placements discuss how to select and approach companies, the best way to sell yourself and your experiences and how to make the most of it once you’re there.
Speakers: Connie Heyes, Industrial Placements Manager, School of Engineering, Design & Technology, University of Bradford and Grace Mark, Architecture student, UCL
